"You're as straight as split bamboo!" Bamboo has long symbolized integrity, constancy, and an upright character, making it especially beloved among scholars. A strip split from bamboo is known as daejjok. Because bamboo may split but does not readily bend, the expression came to describe someone of exceptionally steadfast principles and upright character.
